An awning is more than just a cover; it's an extension of your RV's living space, a spot for outdoor meals, relaxation, and gatherings. However, exposure to elements like sun, wind, and rain can cause wear and tear. To ensure the longevity of your awning, here are a few awning care and maintenance tips from Trailer Brothers.
The first step to maintaining your awning is understanding that not all materials are created equal. Here at trailer brothers we offer two types of fabrics: Standard and Premium. Standard fabric is cheaper but is prone to weather rot and flaking. Premium fabric is made of a better material but does cost more. Our premium fabrics include a rubber flex material on the first several inches to protect it from ripping and flaking. When the awning is rolled, the rubber flex is the only part exposed which protects from fading and mildew. Knowing your awning's material will help you select the appropriate cleaning products and maintenance procedures.
Just like any part of your RV, your awning needs regular cleaning. We recommend using a soft brush and a mild soap or another awning specific cleaner. Avoid using oil-based soaps or abrasive cleaners as they can damage the material. Rinse your awning thoroughly and let it dry completely before rolling it up to prevent mold and mildew.
Routine inspection of your awning for any signs of damage is crucial. Check for small tears, loose stitching, or damaged hardware. Early detection can prevent minor issues from turning into major problems. If you spot any damage, it's advisable to have it repaired or replaced immediately by a professional.
Make sure to operate your awning properly. Always roll it up during heavy wind or rain to avoid damage. Remember that your awning is primarily a sunshade. If you're leaving your RV unattended, it's best to retract the awning to prevent unexpected weather damage.
When it's time to hit the road, ensure that your awning is dry and clean before storing it. This helps prevent mildew and foul odors. If you have to store it wet, make sure to unroll and dry it out as soon as you can.
Before long-term storage, inspect all parts of your awning and fabric to make sure they are dry and secure. It is best to lubricate the moving parts at least once a year. Consult your awning's manual for the right type of lubricant to use.
Proper care and maintenance can significantly extend the life of your RV awning, providing you with many more years of outdoor enjoyment. Remember, a clean, well-maintained awning is not only functional but also enhances the aesthetic appeal of your RV.
At Trailer Brothers, we understand the value of your awning and are here to help with any repairs or maintenance it might need. We also provide a comprehensive range of other RV services, including air conditioning repair, electrical installation, and more.
